チッソ、単体ベースで３４年ぶり黒字転換
水俣病患者への補償金の支払いを続けてきた石油化学メーカー・チッソの中間決算が単体ベースで３４年ぶりに黒字化した。液晶や半導体向け材料などＩＴ（情報技術）関連製品が好調で、経常利益が補償関連の特別損失を上回ったためだ。１８日発表した９月中間決算は、当期利益が２億円と７０年９月中間決算以来の黒字となった。一部事業を合弁会社として切り離したため、売上高は前年同期比１０．３％減となったものの、電子材料が１９．２％の大幅増収になるなどした結果、経常利益は１５．３％増の３５億円となり、補償関連の特別損失２２億円を吸収した。連結ベースでは０４年３月期に黒字化している。
同社がこれまでに支払った補償金は累計で１３１４億円。００年３月に国と金融機関から６２０億円の債務免除を受けたが、今年９月末時点で、なお１４２３億円（単体）の債務超過にある。
チッソは９９年１１月に自民党の水俣問題小委員会に対して、本業の事業価値を高めるため、債務を別会社化する案を提案した経緯がある。
